Iaki Vallejo Hearts Mother Earth On Her New Single Calling For Action To Protect Our Fragile Environment

by Scenestr on December 19, 2022

A heartbreaking admonition of lost love for family, children and the planet, Melbourne's Iaki Vallejo returns with new single 'Donde está el amor (Where Is The Love?'), an earnest and ardent plea for urgent action to counter climate change.

A dual-language serenade that features guest verses from Zimbabwean-Australian singer Thando, Vallejo wants to bridge divides and bring the world's people together.

For those new to you, what's your background and how would you describe your music?
I am originally from Colombia, precisely from a beautiful city called Cali. Cali is famed around the world, as being the capital of salsa.

My music is a blend of different rhythms. I love to fuse Afro-Colombian rhythms with jazz, soul, reggae, salsa, Afrobeat and funk, and now I am beginning new adventure with electronic music.

The fusion of your African and Colombian heritage; how does that manifest in your music?
It manifests by allowing the rhythm to be the protagonist of my music. Everything I make has the rhythm up; that's a strong African tradition. My music has always been a celebration of the rich heritage I have and the cultures I grew up in.

Melbourne’s iaki Vallejo has a silky smooth new serenade entitled “Donde está el amor”. A heartbreaking admonition of lost love for family, children and the planet. iaki’s serene voice and masterful performance gently mourn for lost ideals in a time of chaos. Her emotive Spanish vocals are lovingly complimented by a feature verse from RnB/Soul star thando. The dual language aspects of this track speak of a desire to bridge divides and bring the world’s people together. With a combination of African & Indigenous Colombian heritage as well as a passion for Melbourne’s multiculture and a history of cross cultural collaboration; iaki is all about bringing people together.  You can tell that in her music as the rhythms, the lyrics and the collaborations are on a constant journey of exploration and conciliation.

To celebrate the release iaki will be performing a special on off show for Multicultural Arts Victoria on the evening of release (Tonight, Thursday 17th March) entitled “Tres Cantos”.

The concert will feature Iaki alongside Ethiopian-Australian singer and dancer Seble Girma plus a guest appearance from thando for the live premiere of “Donde está el amor”.

iaki Vallejo is at her most forlorn in her latest track, the silky smooth 'Donde está el amor', with a captivating verse from thando.

The two Melbourne favourites combine on Vallejo’s latest for a bilingual serenade, the latest in Vallejo’s long and colourful history of cross-cultural collaboration.

Lulled to sleep at night by the sound of street music – the sound of drums, chants, dances and vinyl records – during her Colombian ‘hood’ upbringing, Vallejo is also of African descent, but has formed a phenomenal reputation within the Melbourne music scene, not just as a performer, but as a singer-songwriter, choir leader, visual artist and producer.

Maria Se Fue is Spanish and translates to Maria Left. The Spanish vocals delivered by iaki Vallejo are in tune with the alive backing track, and the rap vocals offered by Alexis Play are on point as well. The track has a strong tropical/foreign vibe to it that is enjoyable to experience.

iaki Vallejo – Mi barrio
iaki Vallejo – Mi barrio

by El Parlante Amarillo on August 2, 2016

I didn’t find music, it found me
I didn’t find music, it found me

Iaki Vallejo is a Colombian singer who is based in Melbourne. She grew up in an environment where loud music and dance never seemed to ever despair its occupants. From inception, this was what influenced her musical career, which was ignited as early as she was 4 years of age.

As young as she was, she was so resilient in her musical career, as she performed in hotels, festivals, and private parties at her hometown, restaurants, and at her school's singing festivals, in the quest of searching for a music path which she believed was her destiny. She once stated in one of her words that: "I didn't find music, it found me".
